Baby 100 Days Celebration
The number one hundred is a noteworthy quantity in many fields of life. From maths to science, from politics to religion. And even money and sport. Most of the world’s currencies are divided into units of a hundred. And scoring a century in cricket, for instance, is a batsman’s distinguishing feat. In some cultures, it has specific meaning for a child. A baby’s first 100 days represents a significant milestone and a chance to celebrate.
In Chinese culture, for example, a hundred days after birth, family and friends send all sorts of gifts to celebrate the occasion. From clothing to jewellery, from shoes to hats, these baby 100 days celebration gifts express a wish, that the child will live a hundred years. Who doesn’t want the promise of longevity and blessing for their children?
In such celebrations, I’m told that the baby often wears a silver pendant around his or her neck, a pendant called the Longevity Lock. And gifts of clothes will often have long fringes since the pronunciation of the word “fringe” in the Chinese language is the same as the word “year.” Many fringes speak of many years. A full life of blessing, peace and abundance. What a beautiful notion.
